What is The recommended Burning Time for Scented Candles? - Burning Tips for Candle Lovers

Candles are not only relaxing but also have the power to transform the ambiance of your space. With their warm glow, they add instant charm to any room. Placed in a softly lit area, their flickering light creates a welcoming atmosphere, while their fragrances impart a signature scent to your home.

Whether you have a go-to favorite or an extensive collection, maximizing the enjoyment of your candles' light and fragrance is key. Here are some tips to help maintain their beauty and extend the burning time of jar candles safely. Following our guidelines will help ensure that you can do so safely.

Burning for up to four hours at each lighting. Be careful not to tunnel after putting out candles.

We suggest burning your jar candles for up to four hours during each use for optimal efficiency and safety. After extinguishing, allow the candle to cool, trim the wick to ¼”, and relight.

Surprisingly, candles, much like people, have 'memories.' This means they recall their initial burn time and will continue to burn in that shape thereafter. If you only burn your candles for short periods, they won't melt enough wax, leading to tunneling where the center burns down, leaving the sides untouched. This significantly shortens the candle's lifespan.

Fortunately, candles are forgiving, and there are ways to remedy this issue. One method is to ensure the candle's initial 'memory' is set properly. For the first burn, let the candle burn for a duration equal to its diameter (e.g., a 4" diameter candle should burn for 4 hours). Alternatively, for most pillar candles with diameters between 3 and 4 inches, burning for at least 3 hours is sufficient. The crucial aspect to monitor before extinguishing is whether the wax has melted to the edges of the candle.

How to Fix Tunneling

But what if you need to extinguish the flame prematurely or if your candle already exhibits tunneling? Don't worry, a simple trick involving tin foil can rectify this issue in no time! Just follow these steps:

  • Light your candle.
  • Take a square of tin foil.
  • Fold the foil in half and wrap it around the top of the candle, forming a funnel shape.
  • Leave at least 1 ½ to 2 inches of space at the top to allow the candle to breathe.
  • Let the candle burn for 10 minutes.
  • Remove the foil.

After removing the foil, you should notice that the center of your candle has liquefied up to the edges. This will establish a new 'memory' for your candle, ensuring it burns properly without tunneling in the future. Remember to keep a close watch on your candle during this process. If it appears that the edges might melt or the wax could spill out, remove the foil early and extinguish the flame.

Should not be burned when your candles are approximately 1 to ½ inch in height

Do not burn pillar candles when they are approximately 1 to ½ inch in height. Burning a candle lower than this poses a fire hazard. Remember to retire the candle at this height and appreciate the beauty it has brought to your space during its extended burning time.
